🇵🇹 A Torre de Menagem é o mais importante elemento remanescente do antigo castelo de Braga, mandado construir por D. Dinis após as invasões de 1369, segundo consta nalguns documentos.

Este castelo foi demolido em 1906 e terá tido seis torres, das quais ainda subsistem vestígios. Apesar de só a Torre de Menagem ser visível, existem inúmeros troços do antigo castelo, que foram reaproveitados pelas edificações circundantes. A torre sineira da igreja da Lapa (localizada a escassos metros da Torre de Menagem), por exemplo, resulta do reaproveitamento de um cubelo do castelo (torreão de planta circular ou semi-circular, que tinha a função de reforçar a muralha do edificado); grande parte da muralha oriental sobreviveu no interior do quarteirão e uma parte do torreão sul está, também, integrada nas traseiras de uma habitação voltada ao Largo Barão de São Martinho (também localizado nas imediações).

Monumento Nacional desde 1910, a Torre de Menagem tem três pisos e cerca de 30 metros de altura. A sua construção revela um projeto claramente gótico, com ameias e matacães nos vértices e, no topo, uma janela geminada e as pedras de armas de D. Dinis.

A Torre abre para visitas de terça-feira a sábado, das 14h00 às 17h30. A entrada é gratuita.

🇬🇧 The ‘Torre de Menagem’ is the most important remaining element of the old castle of Braga, ordered to build by D. Dinis after the invasions of 1369, according to some documents.

This castle was demolished in 1906 and would have had six towers, of which vestiges still exist. Although only the ‘Torre de Menagem’ is visible, there are numerous sections of the old castle, which were reused by the surrounding buildings. The bell tower of the Church of Lapa (located a few meters from the ‘Torre de Menagem’), for example, results from the reuse of a turret from the castle (circular or semi-circular, which had the function of reinforcing the building’s wall); a large part of the eastern wall has survived inside the block and a part of the south tower is also integrated into the back of a house facing Largo Barão de São Martinho (also located nearby).

A National Monument since 1910, the ‘Torre de Menagem’ has three floors and is about 30 meters high. Its construction reveals a clearly Gothic design, with battlements and boulders at the corners and, at the top, a semi-detached window and the coat of arms of D. Dinis.

The Tower is open for visits from Tuesday to Saturday, from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm. Admission is free.
