🇵🇹 Situada na Rua do Raio, em pleno centro da cidade, a Fonte do Ídolo é, de forma genérica, um artefacto arqueológico composto por uma rocha granítica, na qual se observa uma longa série de esculturas e inscrições latinas. A sua interpretação não é, contudo, clara, sendo dificultada pela significativa deterioração sofrida pelo monumento ao longo dos tempos.

Destas esculturas, fazem parte elementos diversificados, como a representação de uma pessoa, em pé, com pouco mais de um metro de altura, encoberta por roupagens compridas. Embora não seja possível identificar se a personagem é feminina ou masculina, consegue perceber-se que se trata de uma figura togada, que segura na mão um objeto, que será, talvez, uma cornucópia (símbolo da fertilidade). No lado esquerdo da sua cabeça, vê-se uma inscrição sobre o parceiro e imigrante de Acróbriga, pelo que tudo indica que esta figuração seja consagrada à Deusa Nábia (Deusa dos Rios e da Água) e ao Deus Tongus Nabiagus (seu parceiro), cujo busto estará retratado à direita, num pequeno nicho.

Contudo, esta ideia não reúne consenso e diversas personalidades têm opiniões divergentes quanto à identidade das figuras. Há quem considere que o Deus Tongus Nabiagus está representado no busto dentro do nicho, e Celico Fronto, o edificante da fonte, representado em alto-relevo. Por outro lado, há quem defenda que o Deus Tongus Nabiagus está representado em alto-relevo, e que é Celico Fronto que corresponde ao busto dentro do nicho.

Construído no século I, este Santuário Rupestre ligado ao culto da água deve a sua edificação a Celico Fronto, um cidadão romano, que a terá mandado fazer para usufruto da comunidade de Bracara Augusta. Mas o valor da Fonte do Ídolo vai além da obra implícita à sua edificação: os dados históricos que revela são de enorme importância, permitindo confirmar, por exemplo, a existência de uma Mitologia Lusitana que em nada diferia das mitologias romana e grega.

A singularidade desta fonte em granito, conferiu-lhe, em 1910, a classificação como Monumento Nacional. Mais recentemente, entre 2001 e 2004, foi alvo de importantes obras de musealização, construindo-se uma estrutura que protege o monumento e que permite ao público a sua visita. Estão assegurados, para o bem patrimonial e para o público, as condições climáticas adequadas e os requisitos de acessibilidade para pessoas com mobilidade condicionada, de segunda a sexta-feira, das 9h30 às 13h00 e das 14h00 às 17h30, ou ao sábado, das 11h00 às 17h30. A Fonte do Ídolo encontra-se encerrada aos domingos e feriados.

🇬🇧 Located on Rua do Raio, in the heart of the city, the Fonte do Ídolo is, in a generic way, an archaeological artefact composed of a granite rock, in which a long series of sculptures and Latin inscriptions can be observed. Its interpretation is, however, not clear, being hampered by the significant deterioration suffered by the monument over the time.

These sculptures include diverse elements, such as the representation of a person, standing, just over a meter tall, covered by long clothes. Although it is not possible to identify whether the character is female or male, it is possible to perceive that it is a figure wearing a toga, holding an object in his hand, which is, perhaps, a cornucopia (symbol of fertility). On the left side of her head, there is an inscription on the partner and immigrant of Acróbriga, so everything indicates that this figuration is consecrated to the Goddess Nabia (Goddess of Rivers and Water) and the God Tongus Nabiagus (her partner), whose bust will be pictured on the right, in a small niche.

However, there is no consensus on this idea and different personalities have differing opinions with respect to the identity of the figures. There are those who consider that the god Tongus Nabiagus is represented in the bust inside the niche, and Celico Fronto, the edifier of the fountain, represented in high relief. On the other hand, there are those who argue that the god Tongus Nabiagus is represented in high relief, and that Celico Fronto corresponds to the bust inside the niche.

Built in the 1st century, this Rock Sanctuary linked to the cult of water owes its construction to Celico Fronto, a Roman citizen, who had it built for the enjoyment of the community of Bracara Augusta. But the value of the Fonte do Ídolo goes beyond the work involved in its construction: the historical data it reveals are of enormous importance, allowing us to confirm, for example, the existence of a Lusitanian Mythology that in no way differed from Roman and Greek mythologies.

The uniqueness of this granite fountain gave it, in 1910, the classification as a National Monument. More recently, between 2001 and 2004, it was the subject of important musealization works, building a structure that protects the monument and allows the public to visit it. Adequate climatic conditions and accessibility requirements for people with reduced mobility are ensured, for the heritage property and for the public, from Monday to Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., or on Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. at 5:30 pm. Fonte do Ídolo is closed on Sundays and holidays.
