Mosteiro de Santo André de Rendufe

🇵🇹 São quase mil, os anos de história do Mosteiro de Santo André de Rendufe. Localizado na vila de Amares, no distrito de Braga, tem construção anterior a 1090, recuando ao tempo do Conde D. Henrique. Em dezembro desse ano, já os registos se referiam ao abade dali, e de acordo com uma inscrição existente no pavimento, junto ao arco do cruzeiro, o templo já se encontrava concluído em 1151.

Do conjunto, a Igreja é a única infra-estrutura que se mantém funcional. Românica e barroca, de planta em cruz latina e nave única, conta com retábulos de talha dourada no interior, bem como uma série de pedras tecnicamente bem decoradas. Na sacristia registam-se móveis datados de 1697. A fachada, integrada entre duas torres sineiras, apresenta grande sobriedade estilística e imagens de granito de conjunto invulgar.

Entre os séculos XII e XIV, esta foi uma das principais casas dos monges beneditinos em Portugal. Depois de um forte abalo, resultante da gestão ruinosa dos abades comendatários, de questões levantadas e conflitos entre a instituição e outras entidades, o Mosteiro acabou por ser extinto, voltando a ser renovado em 1401.

A grande reforma da abadia primitiva deu-se em 1551, ano em que todo o complexo foi reedificado, passando, então, a possuir três naves com capelas laterais. Outras obras se seguiram, como a da fachada da portaria, que ostenta a data de 1638, ou do teto da nave, que foi forrado por duas vezes. A biblioteca foi edificada em 1716 e o dormitório remonta a 1728.

É no século XVIII que se assiste a uma maior e constante atividade construtiva, responsável pela remodelação integral da igreja e demais dependências conventuais. No entanto, grande parte destas viriam a desaparecer no incêndio de 1877.

Devido à sua importância e magnitude, o Mosteiro de Santo André de Rendufe encontra-se classificado como Imóvel de Interesse Público, desde 1943.

Isolado entre vinhas, entre as quais se ergue um aqueduto que fornecia água ao local, o espaço está hoje em estado de ruína, mantendo, contudo, a silhueta arquitetónica. Muito se tem falado sobre o seu futuro. Imponente, majestoso e icónico, diz-se que será um hotel.

🇬🇧 There are almost a thousand years of history of the Monastery of Santo André de Rendufe. Located in the village of Amares, in the district of Braga, it was built before 1090, dating back to the time of Count D. Henrique. In December of that year, the records already referred to the abbot from there, and according to an existing inscription on the pavement, next to the crossing arch, the temple was already completed in 1151.

Of the whole, the Church is the only infrastructure that remains functional. Romanesque and Baroque, with a Latin cross plan and a single nave, it has gilded altarpieces inside, as well as a series of technically well decorated stones. In the sacristy there are pieces of furniture dating from 1697. The facade, integrated between two bell towers, presents great stylistic sobriety and images of granite of an unusual set.

Between the 12th and 14th centuries, this was one of the main houses of Benedictine monks in Portugal. After a strong shock, resulting from the ruinous management of the commendatory abbots, from questions raised and conflicts between the institution and other entities, the Monastery ended up being extinguished, being renewed again in 1401.

The major renovation of the primitive abbey took place in 1551, the year in which the entire complex was rebuilt, then having three naves with side chapels. Other works followed, such as the facade of the entrance hall, which bears the date of 1638, or the ceiling of the nave, which was covered twice. The library was built in 1716 and the dormitory dates back to 1728.

It was in the 18th century that there was a greater and constant constructive activity, responsible for the complete remodeling of the church and other convent dependencies. However, most of these would disappear in the fire of 1877.

Due to its importance and magnitude, the Monastery of Santo André de Rendufe has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1943.

Isolated among vineyards, between which an aqueduct that supplied water to the site stands, the space is now in a state of disrepair, however, maintaining its architectural silhouette. Much has been said about its future. Imposing, majestic and iconic, it is said to be a hotel.
